About Me

Cawood Fitzhugh is an educator, healthcare provider and meditation practitioner who loves teaching the modern science of mindfulness.  As a nurse practitioner for many years, she enjoyed supporting others in finding their own inner resources towards optimal health through positive change.

She continues in her lifelong journey guiding others in reducing their stress and working with habit change as a mindfulness instructor.  She received her Teacher Certification from Brown University for Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction(MBSR) after initiating her training at the Center for Mindfulness at the UMASS Medical School, where Jon Kabat Zinn first initiated the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program. She is also a Mindfulness-Based Habit Change facilitator through Dr. Judson Brewer’s MindSciences Digital Therapeutic programs, which combine app-based training with Zoom facilitated sessions to address habits from emotional eating, cigarette smoking, smart phones, and anxiety.

Cawood teaches group Zoom sessions on habit change and individual counseling sessions. In addition to this she is one of the teachers for the University of Virginia Mindfulness Center, the Compassionate Care Initiative with the UVA School of Nursing, and for the organization Mindful Leader. She facilitates 1 day Retreats in stress reduction for healthcare systems and businesses.

Retired from healthcare, Cawood still finds joy in helping others through these programs. She received her Masters in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner and Bachelor of Nursing all from the University of Virginia.  She has worked in both the University of Virginia and Sentara healthcare systems.
